Christmas Update

So, the Christmas is just around the corner, and therefore I'm going to take a small brake. Before I go on holidays though, I'd like to talk about few small things regarding the project, as well as the game jam.

As of writing this post, I've managed to rate and review 40 entries. I'm not sure if it is a lot or not, but I've tried to rate as much of the entries as possible, before the Christmas. I actually liked most of those entries, with my favorites being: Sealed Bite, Time Space Leaper, Colorbound, COWs, Cannonball Engineers, and many more! In my opinion, this jam has been better than the last one, and that is for two reasons. The main reason, is that there was more room for the theme interpretation. The "Leaps and Bounds" theme could interpreted in many ways, and even then, explaining how was the theme interpreted wasn't even necessary. That has allowed me to create this game, which I actually wanted to create on the previous jam, but couldn't fit it into "Hybrid" theme. And the second reason as to why this jam was better, is the length of the voting phase, which is still ongoing. That much time has allowed me to review more games than on the previous one! Now, since it is still ongoing, I don't really know how well did my game do. But it has been reviewed by 15 people already, which is a good thing, and definitely better than 3.

I've also managed to get a lot of feedback regarding this game, which is a really great thing! The best part of this game, was the audiovisual one, and the fact that there is a lot of content in the current game. However, the gameplay itself, wasn't the best. That situation, has been caused by the way that I've developed the game. During the 30 days of the development, I've put most of my attention into polishing the graphics and models, implementing new core mechanics, and adding as much content as possible. Thanks to that, the visuals look nice, there are many types of items, NPCs, and biomes, and there are many things that you can do, like trading, raiding monuments, trying to explore hard to reach locations, and many more! But for all of that, I didn't spent that much time on play testing, and there are a few noticeable issues with that matter. The main issues with the gameplay being: stiff controls, flawed item spawning system, lack of many mutants, flawed hunger system, and the game being sometimes too easy, and sometimes too difficult.

Those issues however, I've already addressed in my replies, and as I said, they're very easy to fix. That being said, I will upload an updated version of this game after the jam ends. The main changes that I'm planning to make are:

  • Change the item spawning system from "specific item for specific location", to completely random
  • Change the NPC spawning system, to provide more mutants, and less human beings
  • Add more mutant types, more monuments, and more items and weapons
  • Rework the physics of the main character
  • Make the differences between difficulty levels more visible
  • Fix few visual mishaps
  • Increase hunger time, and double the amount of hunger decreased via eating food items
  • Make hazards (other than the starvation) more dangerous

There are also some other changes and additions that I might add, but since they're not really all that important right now, and I don't know if I'm going to add them at all, I'm just gonna keep them as a surprise. I should start working on it after the new year, and I should release the update somewhere in January.

That's all that I wanted to say. I had fun making this game, and I think that it has a huge potential! I don't think I'm going to stop working on it, and after the update that I'm planning, I might create an even better version of this game!

But for now, thank you for playing and rating, and I wish you a merry Christmas!
